At the Meadows we work to develop the children’s ability to be independent. Based around Montessori’s ‘Practical Life’ philosophy we embed the importance of every child feeling valued through developing the skills of independence.

This may be through toileting, cleanliness, the setting-up of activities, the means to engage in activities, putting on their own coats and shoes, the dressing of themselves, helping their teachers to wash-up and set-up during lunch time.
These skills of independence for the Meadows child gives them ownership, responsibility, confidence and engagement in their own learning, which prepares them for the skills they need to be a confident, independent learner at school.
At the Meadows we believe these skills are essential and as such are carefully embedded throughout their time at the nursery, from our youngest group (10 months+) to our eldest group (up to age 5).
Our nursery teachers are carefully trained to understand the need for careful engagement, where open questions enable the child to think for themselves, building their ability to do things for themselves.
